![]() When I got to the chapter on Jason Priestley and read the words, “He is all smiles and apologies as he arrives at Art’s Deli half an hour late because work had detained him,” I just about fell over! Oh, how right my mom was! Not only does the restaurant have a celebrity connection, but to my favorite show of all time, no less! I was so thankful I had taken some pics of the place! The only trouble was that when I went to locate the shots, they were nowhere to be found. On the advice of my good friend/fellow 90210 aficionado Mike, from MovieShotsLA, I ordered a copy of the book Beverly Hills, 90210: Exposed!, an authorized behind-the-scenes look at the series and its stars written by Bart and Nancy Mills in 1991. I snapped a few pictures regardless, but never did further research on the subject. ![]() I spent the next couple of minutes bothering the staff with inquiries about shoots on the premises, but no one was aware of any. During our meal, my mom encouraged me to take photos of the place as she figured it had likely been utilized for filming at some point or had a celebrity connection. Case in point – about a decade ago, while stalking in Studio City, my mom, my dad, the Grim Cheaper and I passed by Art’s Delicatessen & Restaurant on Ventura Boulevard and decided to pop in for a bite. The long reach of Stephen King's imagination and the no-holds-barred force of his storytelling have never been so richly demonstrated. What does it all mean? What else could it mean? First there was Night Shift (1978), then Skeleton Crew (1985), and now Stephen King is back with a third collection of stories-a vast, many-chambered cave of a volume, with passages leading every which way to hell. We mostly think of our brains as generating conscious thought, but, as he explains it’s just the small tip of the iceberg. It’s the first book that I’ve encountered that delves deeply into this particular subject. His writing, completely accessible to the non expert, is filled with solid neuroscience, packaged in a way that not only provides interesting information, but also builds perspective. Eagleman is not only a neuroscientist, but an extremely clear and engaging writer. ![]() The book, “Incognito: Secret Lives of the Brain” by David Eagleman, is an engaging account of those processes – packed with practical and interesting examples and insight. Our opinions and deepest held beliefs – those that we prefer to feel that our conscious mind completely determines – are shaped largely by unconscious processes. Further, these unconscious processes include those that influence our basic perceptions of the world. Most of our brain activity is not conscious – from processes that maintain our basic physiology to those that determine how we catch a baseball and play a piano well. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The book had a profound effect in Western philosophy, and "has been praised and blamed for the development of existentialism, communism, fascism, death of God theology, and historicist nihilism." Focusing on topics in metaphysics, epistemology, physics, ethics, history, religion, perception, consciousness, and political philosophy, The Phenomenology is where Hegel develops his concepts of dialectic (including the Master-slave dialectic), absolute idealism, ethical life, and Aufhebung. Phenomenology was the basis of Hegel's later philosophy and marked a significant development in German idealism after Kant. The title can be translated as either The Phenomenology of Spirit or The Phenomenology of Mind, because the German word Geist has both meanings. Why do they live at all.” With portraits of previously unheralded events and people rendered in exquisite detail, Perry answers Faulkner’s challenge. “Tell about the South,” Faulkner famously enjoined in Absalom, Absalom! “What’s it like there. “ is really the core of what the nation is,” she writes, “often the vanguard of where we are going as a country.” In it, Perry reexamines that characterization, complicating it and calling it into question by reminding us that good, bad, and indifferent, the South is the birthplace of much of what makes America America. That leaves the South as the “backward other,” observes Imani Perry in her provocative, perspective-shifting South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation (Ecco), which won the 2022 National Book Award for nonfiction.
